HOPE – The “Save the Children” program of the Hope Public Schools 21st Century Learning Center will host a summer “boost” camp to boost reading and math skills in grades 1-6 through a series of summer activities.
Eddra Phillips, STC director, said the June 6 – July 18 summer program will incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities along with Lego robotics, teambuilding, talent shows, field trips and other activities into a “Camp Explore” theme.
The summer program is operated daily, and approximately 125 class slots are currently available, Phillips said.
“Participating in this program will help many students in preventing summer learning loss,” she said. “We target students that need an extra boost to get to or maintain grade level reading and/or math. We also look for students that exhibit good, positive behavior, who will take full advantage of the opportunity to learn and attend every day.”
Structured to include fun activities, the program has five educational components, including guided independent reading practice; reading aloud with fluency and vocabulary; math instruction; math extension; and physical education, Phillip said.
Each element builds upon learning from the school year through innovative means, she said.
“Students are introduced to new vocabulary words and have regular occasions to practice reading fluency,” Phillip said. “We have also included the use of music in our fluency practices. The students read the words to music lyrics that have a positive message related to the read aloud book.”
Math extension is developed through game play that incorporates math skills practice and provides interventions for development.
“In the afternoon session, students are introduced to more activities and games through team building activities, STEM sessions, community service projects, and nutrition lessons,” Phillips said. “Every day students also receive character education. The lessons learned in Summer Boost Camp helps the student not only in school but also in everyday life.”
